Moving goods is easy.
At least, it is when you have an expert transport company on your side.
But when it comes to transporting fertilisers, particularly ammonium-nitrate based fertilisers, there is more to be considered than the standard vehicle size, transport deadline and customs.
Here’s what you need to know about transporting your fertilisers.
Prioritising safety
According to the UK Gov, the UK is the world’s biggest user of ammonium and ammonium-nitrate based fertilisers.
The storage, manufacturing and transportation of ammonium nitrate fertilisers can potentially, if the product is not secured properly, attract theft.
Meanwhile, ammonium nitrate has the potential to cause significant damage during transit, particularly in the event of a fire. According to the Health and Safety Executive:
“Ammonium nitrate will not explode due to the friction and impact found in normal handling, but it can be detonated under heat and confinement or severe shock. For example, in a fire, pools of molten ammonium nitrate may be formed and if the molten mass becomes confined (e.g. in drains, pipes, plants or machinery) it could explode… When some types of ammonium nitrate fertilisers (cigar burners) are heated they undergo a smouldering self sustaining) decomposition that can spread throughout the mass to give substantial toxic fumes, even when the initial heat source is removed.”
For this reason, ensuring that your goods are transported:
- In a vehicle that has been correctly secured
- By a driver with experience in transporting hazardous goods
Will help to protect your fertiliser from being stolen or from potentially combusting during transit.
